By Stony Brook MSA | November 2, 2007
Thank You!
Stony Brook MSA Fast-A-Thon 2007
Hunger?
The United States, as hard as it may be to believe, has at least 23 million people yearly run to shelters and soup kitchens in search of food. According to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Reports, one out of every three African children is “chronically malnourished”. These are disquieting and alarming numbers–especially after we quietly look to our own situations and realize that we eat well and to our fill with multiple meals a day, which we all enjoy very comfortably.
Why go hungry?
These victims of hunger and poverty often have nothing to do with their situations and are helpless. This compels us, those who have the power to make a difference, to take any step we can towards alleviating the silent pandemic of poverty which we find so prevalent in our world today. So today by joining us, you have firstly acknowledged the problem we have ahead of us as global community and secondly have shown your solidarity in helping us alleviate this problem. Let’s keep in mind the words of Lao Tzu, “Great acts are made up of small deeds.” This is the first step–as small a step as it may seem. And as the Prophet Muhammad, upon him blessings and peace, said “Indeed actions are based on their intentions,” so let us intend to make this the beginning of the end of poverty, as long as the journey may last.
RULES
If you aren’t exactly sure of what ‘fasting’ entails, here’s the break down. Tomorrow at approximately 5:11AM (the time of sunrise) you will begin your fast. We suggest, if you can, that you wake up a little before this time and eat something to nourish you for the upcoming day. If not, then make sure to eat a good dinner! You will be fasting until sunset, which is approximately at 4:45 PM tomorrow. Fasting means abstaining from food, drink, smoking and any form of sexual relations- we also hope you will refrain from negative thoughts and actions (and well, wouldn’t that just be a good thing regardless of if you were fasting?). For those who are free and available, join your fellow fasters at sunset to break the fast in SAC Ballroom A. If you are amongst the first 250 fasters to arrive, we will treat you to a complimentary dinner.

Oh MAN!!! That chocolate cake they served was delicious!

Ya akhi, the whole point of the event was to get people to put food aside to realize the desperation of those less fortunate! Yes, alhamdulilah, that cake was good, but that certainly wasn’t the defining point of the event.
I’m truly happy for those fasters who saw the spiritual and physical benefits of fasting for the day.
