Allahumma Balighna Ramadan!
By Omar | August 31, 2008

Salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu!
Although normal students usually don’t cheer at the start of another school year, Muslims in particular have much to celebrate, as this Fall Semester will be blessed by the start of Ramadan as well! Insha’Allah, we hope that your summer vacation has been productive and beneficial for you thusfar, but with Ramadan right around the corner, it’s time to prepare yourself once more to reap the maximum amount of benefits from this holy month, while also prepping yourself for another semester of school!
And what better way to rack up that bonus hasanat during this month than donating your money to charity! As we’ve done in previous years, insha’Allah once again the MSA will be serving daily iftars with complimentary dinners to everyone. As you can imagine, an endeavor on this scale requires a lot of manpower and money, and alhamdulillah, we’re blessed to have a large number of students and families in the community who can donate and sponsor our iftars to keep them running.
This is where you come in- with the right intentions, win the favor and blessings of Allah (swt) by contributing to the ongoing service of helping to break the fasts of others by donating to the MSA (click here for more details). Gaining invaluable amounts of blessings and getting complimentary dinners each night?! That’s a win-win situation no matter how you cut it, and all we ask in return is a small monetary donation. Do your part and harvest the vast rewards of this blessed month by donating to the MSA’s iftar fund!
JazakumAllah khairun, and insha’Allah we hope to see you all soon!
Wa salaamu alaikum,
Stony Brook MSA

why take donations when most of you are on a meal plan? waste of money…

Sr. Aysha, although the Faculty Students Association’s Campus Dining office gives students the option of standard meal plans, those plans are only restricted to individual use. Meaning, as a club it would be impossible for us to literally get on a cafeteria line and swipe a meal plan card 250 times for everyone each night as a means of serving dinner.
And on that note- meal plans are only for use on-campus, and since we always cater from restaurants that are off-campus, nobody can use meal plans to pay for it (that includes the MSA club).
It isn’t a waste of money at all, really. The meals each night that we offer have only a “suggested donation” where we collect a few dollars from everyone. And if you’ve ever been to the Union Commons, where a halaal food combo can cost anywhere from $8 - $10, you’ll know immediately that Ramadan Iftars save you a ton of money- both in your wallet, and on your meal card.
After Ramadan… …well… …that’s when you’ll need every cent on your card to get by each semester…

Asalaamu Alaikum,
In addition- MSA Iftars are a way for us to sponsor unity and brotherhood amongst our MSA. Commuters and dormers, international students with no family in the states, new converts, everyone can insha’Allah get together and have our iftars together.
There are many students who do not have meal plans or have limited ones, as well- so this really helps those students out insha’Allah.
If you’re from Stony Brook, you should definitely drop by! The schedule is on the Iftar tab on this website :).

I have heard the iftars cost more than $600 a day at stony brook. There seems to be a great potential for the MSA to raise large amounts of money for others as well! (Not that this is not already being done by you guys.. I just never hear about it).
