Let us show our thanks to our chaplain, Sister Sanaa Nadim, and our alumni for their invaluable contributions to this MSA! Sister Sanaa created this MSA, and in doing so, created a safe haven for Muslims to practice their faith without hindrance or concern. She has worked tirelessly, without compensation, for the past twenty-odd years to ensure that our needs are looked after, and has gone beyond the campus community to represent Islam at interfaith events and groups across Long Island. She also supports families in need throughout the area and is always available to lend an ear to anyone who needs to talk, whether it’s to seek counsel or vent. For all of this work, the least we can do is give thanks! Her work is indispensable to our community, so please support her efforts by contributing to the chaplaincy fund, and join us for dinner.

We would also like to thank the alumni who have helped bring new members, run events, and in general dedicated their time to serving their community. Your efforts have helped make the MSA what it is today.

As spring break draws to a close and classes to kick into high gear while the weather gets nicer, you may end up wishing you were outside rather than in. Fear not–the MSA is hosting a weekend-long retreat at Wildwood State Park, led by our very own alum, Daneyal Akhtar! We’ll be taking time to reflect on God’s bounties, learn wilderness skills, like making a fire and constructing a shelter, and play sports. By the end of it, we hope you’ll have drawn closer to nature and your brothers and sisters, and had a reprieve from the daily grind.

In order to participate, you’ll need to sign up! This way we can make the appropriate reservations. NO seats will be available without a reservation. There is a $10 fee per person to cover reservation and material costs, which can be paid in person to a board member (Sumaiya, Adam, Aqsa, Reem, Ammar, Mishal) or online, below.

Jummu’ah prayer is a special gathering for Muslims on every Friday. It consists of a brief sermon followed by the prayer service. Come take part in the experience as part of Islam Awareness Week 2012! The guest speaker will be Anwer Imam.

The Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) is venerated by Christians everywhere, but who is he to Muslims? Join us for a talk with guest speaker John Starling on the true importance of the Prophet Jesus in Islam, part of Islamic Awareness Week 2012.

Millions of people around the world don’t have access to fresh water, resulting in sickness, poverty, and inequality. The MSA and UNICEF are partnering to raise awareness and funds for this cause with spoken word performances, featuring Ammar AlShukry, Gareth Bryant, Kashmir Maryam, and more.

Social justice and supporting those in need are fundamental values of Islam. The MSA is committed to helping out in whatever way it can, and has found an ideal partner in the SBU UNICEF club. UNICEF works in more than 100 countries around the world to improve access to safe water and sanitation facilities in schools and communities, and to promote safe hygiene practices.

Dinner will be served.
